Hundreds of factors determine how often natural stone requires maintenance and entire books have been written about caring for natural stone-we've outlined the basics:

  • Clean stone surfaces with a cleaner that's designed for natural stone. Clean floors with a mop and other surfaces with a soft cloth.
  • Clean interior floors frequently using a clean, non-treated dry dust mop. Dirt and sand cause scratches.
  • Minimize soap scum in showers by using a squeegee after showering
  • Clean countertops daily with a soft cloth or paper towels and a residue free pH neutral cleaner designated safe for natural stone.
  • Flush outdoor pool, patio or hot tub areas with clear water-use a mild bleach solution to remove algae or moss.
  • If you spill anything on your countertops or floors, clean it immediately. Blot, don't rub, and use only cleaning products recommended for your specific stone. Acidic spills (like wine, orange juice, tomato sauce) may etch the stone if not treated correctly.
  • Use coasters under drinks, trivets or mats under hot dishes and mats under objects that might cause scratches.
  • Invest in quality cleaning tools and cleaners. Don't use green or brown scouring pads; their silicon carbide grit will cause damage. Don't use generic tile cleaners, spray cleaners or even dish soap. Ask us about specific tools and cleaners for your type of stone.
  • Have your newly-installed or restored floor or countertops detailed. It's money well-spent.
  • Get granite and other porous stone floors or countertops sealed. Ask about our lifetime sealers.
  • Match your stain removal method and materials to the type of stain. Mustard stains, for example, call for different chemicals than do rust stains.
